Big country feels bigger

I did not think Australia ever got cold

I did well glamping, even in the cabin it was quite cold this morning, imagine what it would have been like in the tent.

Today I took it easy and only cycled 47 miles to be gentle on the tendons. They still hurt but the spray is keeping the pain to a tolerable, and more importantly, cycle-able state.

First half of the day was like riding in the Middlands, only less people.

The scenery today was very average and not varied at all, first a lot of farmland then forest, i guess it’s one of those days when if you were in a car you’d call it a connecting day.

I stopped for a coffee in Cabage Tree Creek and took my leggings and fleece off as the sun was warm enough to warrant it.

Shortly after i restarted I met up with two other cycle tourists. They were from Switzerland and left 14 months ago getting here via Turkey and the “stans”. They, him and her, sold out everything and left so they have no go back date, they’re moving to New Zealand yet but I did not tell them it might be a bit cold there for another few months.

After a bit of conversation while we were cycling I said bye bye and speeded off, remarkable how even if I’m older and carry an injury I was faster. After I left though I though about how little I spent with this people and how quickly I realised that cycling together with people would not work for me.

Doing what I do on my own is a sometime tough, it’s lonely and requires a great deal of self reliance but has the advantage that there is nobody to have to compromise with or to tune your riding speed to.

Who knows, one day I might do a tour with someone else and it will be a huge learning curve but for the time being it’s way better that I keep going around by myself.

47 miles actually go by quite quickly after you’ve done 60+ miles days. I had decided I was going to be either in a cabin or a Motel as the temperature is going down quite low again tonight. Tomorrow I’ll push another 60 miles and will get to the New South Wales coast, with any luck the temperature will be better and I’ll be back to camping.

Too cold for the bike outside, I'll be in the tent in the yard.
